προσκύνησις

Proskynism

PRAWS-kih-niz-um

From the Greek proskynesis: to bow down to the ground in worship.

God

I believe God exists. The universe needs a source, its laws look finely tuned for life, and consciousness points beyond matter. I hold this as the best explanation, open to revision.

I don't claim to know what God is like. No experience or scripture shows it clearly enough. Religions give God a certainty and complexity that no one can justify.

Life

God appears to have wanted life and intelligence. So we should live, protect life, and use our minds. What a given life means is ours to choose.

Suffering comes partly from the stable laws that life depends on. Beyond that, it's a mystery.

Practice

I worship God because God is the ultimate cause of everything. I bow with my forehead to the ground and thank God for my life.

During worship I drone in throat singing, without words or mantras. Wordless sound suits a God I can't describe and don't ask anything of.

I don't ask God for anything. Out of humility, and because life is already enough. I don't know whether God hears or intervenes, but thanking is right either way.

My practice is personal. It has no fixed rules, and I don't try to convert anyone.

People and creation

Every person comes from God, so I treat everyone fairly, myself included. People who harm others deserve justice, and carrying out justice is a human job.

All life deserves respect. Conscious beings come first.

After death

I don't know what happens after death.
